Mini Biography

Charlie Chaplin, as he is popularly known across the world, is an iconic figure despite his otherwise small stature. His characteristic toothbrush mustache, bowler hat, bamboo cane, and a funny walk amused and entertained the children and adults alike and made him a household name globally. He was the pioneer in the genre of comedy in the silent film era and his ability, to make audiences  laugh simply through his gestures and movements and without otherwise uttering a word, was nothing short of a feat.

Early Life:

Coming from a rather deprived background, Charlie spent much of his early childhood in and out of charity homes and workhouses. His father died of alcohol abuse when Charlie was just 12. His mother suffered from periodic bouts of insanity and was committed to a mental asylum. The early death of his father and the illness of his mother made it necessary for Charlie to fend for himself.

Career

He took to the stage as the best opportunity for a career and made his professional debut at the age of eight as a member of a juvenile group called “The Eight Lancashire Lads”. At the age of eighteen, he toured the US and that was the start of his brilliant career in acting and direction. His reason for choosing comedy as his career is linked to his childhood when he was confined to bed for  weeks due to a serious illness and his mother would sit at the window and act out what was going on outside. Between 1914 and 1966, he made and acted in over eighty movies, five of which were `talkies’. Chaplin died of natural causes on December 25, 1977 in Switzerland, where he had settled with his fourth wife. While he had made millions laugh, Chaplin’s own life and career was full of scandals and controversy.

Well, well. The Korean tech giant isn’t far behind when it comes to bringing up the rear. The Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini is finally official. Not going by the name ‘mini’, it could actually pack a punch! With the successful run of its older brother, the S3 Mini hopes to mirror the success that defined the Galaxy S3.

Let’s take at a look at the features that Galaxy S3 Mini will sport.


Display

The younger sibling carries a Super AMOLED 4-inch display with a screen resolution of 800 x 400 pixels, fair bit of compromise when compared to the Galaxy S3.

The resolution on the S3 Mini seems out-of-date when the competition, hauling the same screen size, comes in better HD resolution schemes.

There isn’t tad much of a difference in screen resolution when viewed by the naked eye, though it’s not going to slip under the eyes of the experts.


Processor

Samsung Galaxy S3 runs on a quad-core Exynos processor clocked at 1.4GHz. It’s an interesting piece of detail when compared to the new kid on the block. It looks like the Korean giant halved the spec sheet with the Galaxy S3 Mini.

Powered by a 1 GHz dual-core processor, the mini S3 is quite efficient for running applications and looks more than comfortable to run Android 4.1 aka Jelly Bean. The chipset is a Mali-400 based GPU, meaning that the benchmarking results will be optimised; not nearly as capable as the Galaxy S3 but enough juice to power major applications and processes.


Operating System

It all comes down to who is garbed in Android clothing better; in this case, the S3 Mini.

While the Galaxy S3 is still shipped with the earlier version of the Android OS, Ice Cream Sandwich, the S3 Mini will come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box.

It will grace Samsung’s TouchWiz UI while bringing in a more intuitive interface which the Jelly Bean carries.

Score one for the S3 Mini.


Design

The design echoes its elder brother, the Galaxy S3, with a few changes of its own. Stuffed into a thicker casing, the Galaxy S3 Mini mirrors the Galaxy S3 quite closely.

Its removable battery rear, its plastic casing, the colour scheme are all a shade less than the Galaxy S3. The dimensions stand at 9.9mm x 63mm and weighing in at 119 gm.


Connectivity

In the connectivity department, the S3 Mini isn’t behind the Galaxy S3.

Both devices carry NFC wireless comm., both have the industry standard Bluetooth/GPS and Wi-Fi and both have a microUSB.

The thing most about the microUSB is its MHL compliance. You can watch HD videos but with only the correct cable, a cable meant for Samsung’s own connectivity options. A downer, considering the USD 30 the cable costs.


Reportedly, Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini is expected to hit the market during Christmas and it is expected to be priced between USD 350 to USD 430.

While highly contested, the University of Al-Karaouine in Morocco is considered as the world’s first university and hence the oldest university.  The University is actually recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest degree-granting university in the world.

It was originally founded as a mosque with an associated mosque school (madrasa) which has been referred to as a university. The credit of its foundation goes to a woman called Fatima al-Fihri, the daughter of a wealthy merchant named Mohammed Al-Fihri, who along with many of their community migrated from Kairouan (from where the name of the mosque has come) in Tunisia to Fes in Morocco in the early 9th century. Fatima al-Fihri together with her sibling inherited huge wealth from their father, and Fatima had vowed to utilize her inheritance on the construction and running of a mosque for her community. The dynasties that followed continued to expand the Al-Karaouine mosque until it became the largest in Africa.

The mosque, in addition to a mere place for offering prayers, was developed into a place for religious and political deliberations and instructions.  Gradually, the education programme was extended to a broad range of subjects, particularly the natural sciences, some of which include rhetoric, grammar, logic, music, medicine, mathematics, chemistry, history, geography, astronomy, etc.  Al-Karaouine has been and continues to be one of the leading spiritual and educational centers of the Muslim world, was integrated into the state educational system in the year 1947 and acquired the status of a state university in the year 1963 by a royal decree, which brought it under the supervision of the ministry of education. With the introduction of various reforms such as modern curricula and textbooks, trained faculty, etc., Al-Karaouine was officially renamed “University of Al-Karaouine” in the year 1965.

While many hail the evolution of Al-Karaouine spread across a period of over 1000 years, there are other who dispute its institutional status particularly prior to World War-II, claiming that it started as a mosque school and its transformation into a full-fledged university took place only in the year 1963. UNESCO in contrast considers Al-Karaouine to have been a university since its founding.

Despite the debate, there is however no doubt that Al-Karaouine’s has produced numerous scholars and intellectuals who have strongly influenced the history of Muslim and Jewish worlds.

Alex Mustard, 36, dived 80 feet into the crevice between North America and Eurasia to reveal the stunning landscape.The area - near Iceland - is riddled with faults, valleys, volcanoes and hot springs, caused by the plates pulling apart at about 1 inch per year.
